Destin is Paradise

It’s this time of the year where the weather is perfect making Destin a paradise to live in. Day time temps are about 80 with lows in the mid 60’s. The top is down on Badass and it can stay down!

Sunshine Cindy and I got out a few times this week. Julie had some friends in town staying with her. Tim and Nancy from Tennessee and Dean from Louisiana are here. They have all became friends of ours too. Tuesday night we met them at The Boathouse. They wanted some oysters and the Boathouse has the best. We had a great time. Howling Jack was singing, Tara took good care of us and a big crowd was inside enjoying the salt air. It was a fun evening catching up with all of them.

Wednesday night Sunshine Cindy and I went to Landshark Pizza. We wanted to catch up with “B” to make sure he is able to get us the cups and napkins for our wedding. When we walked in most of the tables were full but the bar was empty. Glen and Brian were at a table. Bruce came in and BS’d with us then he also joined Glen and Brian. About 15 minutes after we got there the bar packed out and the place was jumping. It got so busy Brian had to go back and help out cooking.

Wednesday’s is wing night at Landshark. Jason was making big batches of wings as they were selling like hot cakes. A lot of pizza’s were also being made as so many people were there they ran out of places to sit. They ended up selling over 1000 wings. Wow! We hung out with B for the night. He is taking care of us and we thanked him profusely. It’s great having good friends! Other folks came and went. James and Jonelle stopped in. Jonelle showed off some pictures of a big Cobia she caught earlier in the day. I think it was about 50 pounds. A great fish. It was a fun time at Landshark.

Speaking of fish….the last several weeks have seen a big increase of huge Mako Sharks being caught in the waters off of Destin. There have been several in the 600 to 800 pound range brought in. A couple of guys in Nararre were on the beach and caught a 805 pound Mako the other day. Many of these sharks are only a couple of hundred yards off the beach. They are there all the time but almost never bother humans. The theory is the sharks are following the Cobia. Makes sense.

We also had a pod of Manatee’s swim through Destin the other day. We don’t get a lot of Manatee’s in our area but they do come through once in a while. Seeing a whole pod is unusual. I have had the chance to see them in the waters around Destin a few times and I had an up close look at one in Key West last year. They are a gentle and awesome creature.

I received some news about a couple of new additions to the Destin Commons expansion. The World of Beer will be opening a new place by the middle of summer. They will have a full kitchen and live music. Next door to the World of Beer will be a place called, The Blend. This will be a liquor bar serving all types of high end liquors. They plan to open about the same time. This will be a nice addition to the Destin scene.

Also this week I was able to confirm Lucy Buffett’s “Lulu’s” has actually started construction. It is going to be next to Legendary Marine at the base of the Mid-Bay bridge. I have been told the foundation is poured and the building will start to come out of the ground soon. Grand opening is planned for February 2015. It is going to be a big place from all accounts.

This will be a busy weekend. Thursday is fireworks on the harbor and the first Mattie Kelly concert. Friday the ECPHC meets at The Crust Pizzeria on the harbor for our monthly meeting. Coconut Radio will be the playing music. It will be a fun time. All weekend is the PCPHC’s Rendezvous on the beach in Panama City. We will be there Saturday to see all of our Trop Rock friends. Saturday is also Sunshine Cindy’s birthday. We will be celebrating all weekend!!!

Have a great weekend and I will see ya Monday with a full recap of the fun along the Emerald Coast!
