Summer finally arrives in Destin

We have waited for months but summer has finally made it to Destin. This past week and especially this weekend is what we have come to expect in Destin. It has been sunny, hot, humid with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms! It’s about time!

It was a busy time starting on Thursday. I stopped in at Sago Sports Bar to watch some of the opening NFL game. Tommy was there making sure everything was running smoothly. Zack was behind the bar. For football season they have a new beer tower. For only $12.95 you get 96 oz’s of beer in the tower. It has an expensive rod that stays cold and keeps the beer cold. It’s a great deal as that is equal to about 3 pitchers for less than the price of two. And no, I didn’t get one as I was by myself. Sunshine Cindy decided to stay in.

Beach cleanup

While I was there Dominic came in. He and some friends of his came over and sat at the bar with me. We had a good time watching the game and cracking jokes. One of his friends is now making pizza’s at Sago. He used to own his own place that got rave reviews. I am not sure why he closed but this is Sago’s gain. I will now have to try their pizza.

Friday night I went to Landshark Pizza for a while. Ken was there. He was going to work in while so he didn’t stay. Jason and Becca were working with Brian helping out. I stayed around for a while relaxing before I headed to the American Legion. I wanted to get some pictures of Henri the bartender. Henri is going to be our Crab Island Mambo Mullet Wrapper Bartender of the Month for September. Jimmy, Sonya and John were there to sing Karaoke. I got my pictures, had a couple of beers and headed home as we had a busy Saturday on tap.

Fun day on the beach

Saturday was our 4th beach cleanup of the year. It is a joint project between Crab Island Mambo and the ECPHC. It was a beautiful day on the beach. We got there about 9:15 am. We had about 30 people total come out to help cleanup and then party on the beach. We had a couple of thunderheads build but none made it to us. In the afternoon jelly fish started to infiltrate the water. That pretty much kept us out of the water at that point. They really do sting.

The party went on till about 4:30. At that point we were getting fried. Wayne joined Sunshine Cindy and I at Fuds. We wanted some place cool and to relax. You have to love our Destin beach bars where you can walk in wearing bathing suits, dragging sand and smelling of the Gulf and no one complains. We sat at the bar. As we were there the place started to fill up with Auburn fans getting ready for their upcoming game. By the time we left the place was packed. On our way out we talked to Peter. He is the GM and someone we have known for a while. They are doing real well with this new building.

Henri

Sunday was a kind of laid back day. Sunshine Cindy and I went down to the harbor where Wayne joined us again. We started at Crab Island Cantina. Kyle was behind the bar. Al the sax guy was setting up to play. There were quite a few boats in the harbor and in the pass. People were taking advantage of the nice weather. While we were there Jesse from The Crazy Lobster came in for some lunch. He was on a break and sat with us while he ate.

When we left the Cantina we stopped in at the Crazy Lobster. Jesse was getting off but we stayed for a while as I got my Abita Amber fix. Off we were again. We walked down towards The Boathouse but we planned to stop in at The Monkey Bar first to see what was happening. In front of The Boathouse we saw Jager and Kerby. We told them we would be back. The Monkey Bar was dead. We had one beer and then headed to The Boathouse.

Jerry Diaz and Hanna's Reef

Kelly Byrd was finishing up his set. We talked to Jager and Kerby. There was a decent crowd there. We continued to marvel at the great weather. Time to start to head back towards the car. At AJ’s Ronnie was playing. Sunshine Cindy and I decided to stop and listen to him for a while. Usually the crowd is so big there you can’t find a seat. Wayne headed home but we shared a table with a young tourist couple. They had just got into town from Illinois earlier in the day. We had fun talking to them and playing the role of a chamber ambassador. We suggested they come to the Cantina on Friday to listen to Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef. I think they might actually show up.

It was a fun weekend. Have a great week. See ya Thursday!
