There was a lot going on over the last week in Destin. First, it was Sunshine Cindy’s birthday this past week. She was 39 (again!). Her daughter Tiffany came into town Thursday from Atlanta to help celebrate. The three of us hit the ground running Thursday afternoon and didn’t stop until late Sunday. Thursday night Julie drove us all to Panama City Beach to see Southern Drawl Band perform at Pineapple Willy’s. They put on another fantastic show. The place was packed and everyone had a fun time. Thank you Julie for being our driver for the night!!!
Friday was a parrot head Phlocking at The Crust Pizzeria in Destin. Charley and his team put on a great party for the PH’s. Matt came out of bartending retirement to work the bar. Ron Drolet supplied the musical entertainment. We even had a couple more folks say they are joining the Southern Drawl Band cruise next April. This will be one of the “must attend” parties of 2016. Over 300 folks are already signed up! After the meeting we walked the harbor going to The Boathouse, Destin Harbor Shack and finally AJ’s on the dock. Austin Jennings was playing music at AJ’s and we sat with a couple from north Georgia. It was a fun time.
We left to head home about 12:30 am passing the front of AJ’s. There was a line to get into the club with more vehicles pulling in all the time. I was amazed at the number of people going in there. But AJ’s is one of the top 100 clubs in the country based on revenue right up there with clubs from Vegas and Miami so I should not be surprised.
Saturday was a day spent out and about starting out at Harry T’s for brunch with Sunshine Cindy’s parents. From there we went to Crab Island Cantina. They had some new girls behind the bar and they were hustling around doing a great job. I hope they keep them. The weather was getting threatening and we wanted to go to World of Beer so we headed that way. A storm hit while we were there with strong winds and driving rain. I am glad we were inside.
This storm produced a tragedy in Alabama in Mobile Bay. A sailing regatta was taking place when the storm blew through there. It capsized many boats and several people drowned. That is so sad for all involved.
We made our way to Uncle Bucks for a while then ended the night at Friday’s. We sat outside at Friday’s enjoying the nice evening after the storm. There was a table of several adults and three kids eating two tables down from us. After finishing all their food they complained that their food didn’t look like the pictures in the menu. Tiffany works in the service business and she picked up on what they were doing. The manager from Friday’s comp’ed them their meal. Another scam pulled off that will end up costing those of us who don’t steal (it was nothing more than stealing from the restaurant) more to pay in the future. What a great example to set for your kids too. They were nothing but scum bags!
Sunday we celebrated Sunshine Cindy’s birthday at her parent’s house with a cookout. It was a nice relaxing way to end the weekend. While we were there I saw Facebook messages from a friend who owns a pontoon rental company. One of her boats was out at Crab Island on Sunday and a guy on the boat drowned. He could not swim, got caught up in a strong current and was pulled under. They are still looking to recover him. Our friend and her staff is obviously devastated. Our prayers go out to the guys family and to our friend in this tough time.
It looks like a new business will be taking over the old Twisted Palms building in Destin. They have a new sign out that says, “Studio 98.” I have not seen or heard what this will be. This is a big building that has been a graveyard for previous attempts to make a profit. I will keep trying to find out what this will be.
Last week I mentioned how a bank building was demolished in one day. It turns out a suites hotel will be going up in its place. The land is just about completely clear of all rubble already. Just down the road from this place there is a new condo project next to the Back Porch that was announced last year that is now coming out of the ground. This is going to be a 12 story building blotting out the sun!
Have a great week. See ya next Monday!
